Bonus
I have found unexpected bonus value beyond the stated learning objectives.
1: I do not agree at all / 10: I agree completely

The collaboration component of the workshops was most valuable to me. Having done magic on my own for most of my life with the exception of a few magicians I collaborate with, I found this refreshing to learn and bounce ideas off of magicians from all parts of the world, each with their own voice and thoughts on their art. This is a beautiful thing. Not only were we collaborating, but we were required to actually put our ideas together to produce something in front of our peers. I enjoyed the prompts and group performance exercises because it held us accountable for creating something rather than just performing tricks for each other. This focus and lack of magic wandering/procrastination is something I really want to apply to my everyday life to structure and steer my magic goals and endeavors.
All of these days gave me something that I was not expecting. Even the day when we made our own magic wands. I was not expecting to get that much inspiration and joy from that but I truly did. After that I had a great contact for a guy that makes the best props in magic but also it showed me that I can and I should make some of my own stuff as well.
The course went far beyond my expectations – While the learning objectives were definitely met, I felt that the personal guidance on the top made the course so much more valuable. There were several moments when we were allowed to ask questions regarding our own artistic work and the teachers would give their knowledgeable feedback to help us develop as individuals.
Meeting and connecting with other magicians.
I believe this part could be emphasized even more just by adding a few simple elements during course of the week.
Attending a class which combines a host of international instruction and participants greatly expand the possibilities of unique techniques and thought lines. Working with other students, who’s first language is not the same as mine, encourages me to expand both my vocabulary and language skills. It also gives me a new perspective on common issues. For example, something I might do as a regular action, can be very different from the way another person might do it. Both are correct, just different. Multiply that by a class full of woman and men, and the potential is unlimited.
Another benefit is living on campus. This eliminates the concern for meals and transportation to class. It encourages after class meetings because no one is more than an elevator ride away. The location was great and while the rooms were a bit basic, they were quite acceptable.
100%! I can’t put into words the exact value I got…because I believe it is beyond measure.
I found that I overcame some of my fears to go forward.
The fast pace of the activities of producing a performance with people who you didn’t know, was amazing. Everyone was doing things out of their comfort zones and that was OK, because it was the same for everyone. To know that in 20 minutes a small piece of work can be performed from an idea that didn’t previously exist is an incredible buzz. I’m not the most creative person but was so proud of the stories that were fabricated in the short time available. The confidence boost its given me is fantastic.
I feel that having a workshop where you come together with colleagues in a trusting environment makes for long lasting, meaningful relationships within the field. This I feel is something that is very rare within our field and definitely not something easily achieved in the traditional setting of magic conferences.
Absolutely! Not only that, but this week gave me a new confidence to experiment and try new things.
The friends and connections I made are worth so much! I was also very inspired by the propmaking course in a way I didn’t expect.
This class was life changing. Tom, Leif, Tim, and Hakan did an exceptional job teaching ideas that cannot be found elsewhere. I flew to Sweden from LA and I would do it again in a heartbeat. I was blown away by their genuine dedication to helping us inside and out of the classroom.
In the exercises I was able to come up with more ideas then I’ve imagined I am capable of.
The bar was set high last year. Especially Håkan’s talk, mask theatre and the paper balls were pleasant surprises.
As for things beyond the learning objectives, perhaps not too much. But on the aspect of new ideas constantly popping up, then yes, there was a lot of unexpected bonus value.
Bonus
Tim Star’s Prop Making course was amazing! He was kind, patient and really educational! I was inspired and felt a greater sense of power over my magic afterwards. More of this please.
Indeed. The collaboration with, insights from and sharing between the others was a great bonus! It is something you cannot just “read”.
As I just wrote, I learned even more I was expecting. The other participants from Course A and C did talk and teach all that they were taught too. This happened during the week when we were hanging out after the lessons. So I got to learn subjects and content from their courses too.
As last year, I found bonus value in getting to know new people/friends who inspired me tremendously.
Oh! And working with masks to prepare an act was for me an eye-opening experience.
I always find workshopping ideas a fascinating process. Working under pressure has unexpected benefits, and is not a goal of the course, yet is an integral part. I would therefore say that working in groups to produce material is somehow an unexpected bonus.
New creations, friendships, and knowledge outside of the learning objectives.
This year for me the best parts were seeing my colleagues and friends again, and really getting inspired from all the magic and enthusiasm.
All individeuell feedback både inom teater/ skådespeleri och teknik har lyft mig till en högra nivå än förväntat.
New friends, new ideas, neutral mask 😉 and new skills related to theatre. And I could work on a ~13 years old idea.
The thing about “being real” that Håkan Berg talked about was a very good thing
I got some interesting ideas. Now I just have to realize them.
Yes, again getting the opportunity to work with other colleagues in this practical way is a bonus as we so often work alone. The course provides a space for us to collaborate and share discoveries with one another that we might not discover as quickly working on our own.
“I believe that the most valuable aspect is getting to meet others and think collaboratively with them. The combination of theory, hands-on practice, and social interaction is the perfect blend for working with magic.”
I had a hungarian friend in the B course, who I used to do a duo act with about 15 years ago. But we haven’t worked together ever since. The course was so inspiring to both of us, that we did put together a short act for the final performance of the course. We enjoyed performing so much that we are now about to perform the routine we created in a gala show next month.
I’m not likely to use puppets in my show but it was quite interesting to play with puppets as part of a presentation and how to become “invisible” to the audience.
