Expectations & reality
When comparing my expectations beforehand with what the course actually consisted of… what was different and what was as I expected?
Comments
I walked into the course with no expectations, and walked out with some incredible knowledge.
I don’t believe I had any expectations beforehand. I simply understood that I was going to be learning from a great magician. The course’s content was far beyond what I didn’t expect.
The course exceeded my expectations, which were high to begin with.
Pretty much as expected.
The course exceeded my expectations in many ways. The intellectual content was superb, as was the practical exercise content. I loved working with others and to be in the presence of someone who was so well versed in the theory and art of magic was a real privilege.
I purposely didn’t research that much of the workshop before hand to be surprised by the content, I did exceed my expectations especially with productivity when working in the group sessions
I had no real preconceived idea on the course, other than what was on the website. I would say the course matched the criteria, with the added bonus of interacting with the group in the exercises.
I expected the course to be mostly focused on creativity within groups. My expectations for this element were very well met. I wasn’t expecting so much work on the concepts and the practical application of those concepts. I was very pleasantly surprised. I wonder if some form of the course plan could have been released earlier to provide clearer expectations? Or perhaps a more thorough description of the course?
Most of this I have already described. I was surprised that there were not more full-time magicians on the programme (only 1 or 2). All participants took a full part in the programme, but there was clearly a range of attitudes towards including a more theatrical approach to magic. Some stayed more in the ‘safe zone’ of presenting in their usual style. I was afraid of being thrown in at the deep end, and being required to perform an effect to the whole group early on. This did not happen (for which I thank you 🙂
I didn’t have many expectations. But I loved the hands-on approach and it definitely helped me to create new original material and how I can create my own routines. I feel very happy with the tools provided and all the experience of the 3 days.
more assignment time than expected, less analyzing and theory time, the other students there where just as important for learning if not more than the instructor. No time set for help with solution of assignment. No prepared plan for lunch. Had to film my own videos to get them afterwards.
Better than expected
It exceeded expectations. I loved the approach Tom had.
Jag visste inte riktigt innan vad jag förväntade mig men jag blev mycket positivt överraskad. Alla uppgifterna vi själva skulle skapa material var mycket bra och lärorikt! Helt klart bättre än förväntat!
I had high expectations. Because many friends had taken similar courses with Tom before. Most was as I expected, which is great when expectations are that high! I didn’t think the other students would become such a big part of my learning experience, and that was a welcomed surprise.
it was so much better than I could ever have hoped for
Inte så stor skillnad på vad jag hade hoppats på. Den gav mig mer än vad jag tänkte.
I tried to enter with a blank slate so I went in with nothing really. I did indeed have a great time and got a lot out of the course. I’d recommend anyone to go. I was in a creative drought back then and this helped a lot.
Jag kanske trodde att vi mer skulle bli visade trick som vi sedan fick öva på. Nu fick vi kastas rakt in i att uppträda inför varandra. Först läskigt och nervöst men sen kul, utmanande och lärorikt.
Well you never know what to expect in workshops where your meeting a bunch of new people. However it turned out to be exciting, fun and I learnt a lot. As I had taken part in a previous workshop doing it again actually helped to solidify the techniques I learnt and gave me a deeper understanding of each task. I got to see how other people approached tasks and could learn further from this too.
It was more then I expekted
I expected it to be a lot less hands-on than it turned out to be. I was pleasantly surprised that we were constantly activated and HAD to go and practice and get a grip of any given new concept we were introduced to.
