Changes
What in the course is important to keep, and what is important to change?
Comments
Keep: the challenges. Example: move an item across the room. That forced collaboration across three different skill levels. The information. There is SO MUCH of it. It’s wonderful Change: I’d love to see more of how Tom uses these principles in his magic. I loved seeing the ball vanish for the benson bowl. I loved seeing his use of the magic wand for crossing the gaze. We talked briefly about “Things that go cluck….” as much as I’m attending the workshop to learn new principles, I’m also a fan of Tom’s work (I have his books and dvds), and would like to learn more about WHY he does what he does.
Keep everything. Make the course longer.
The lectures on what is the effect, Ramsey, crossing the gaze, and motion vectors are especially fantastic. I would perhaps like to learn particular exercises that I might practice on my own in order to improve my application of these key concepts.
See above re 3 trick routine. I also thought that time keeping could be better and that more could be done in the allotted time. During the sessions involving individual work Tom could have come round more to give advice and tips.
The first two days were brilliant. The third day would be better with 1) more direct input from Tom in the morning 2) more feedback on the pieces – with the opportunity to then refine these to repeat. As stated before, we all performed our pieces and we could have really taken the opportunity to refine/improve these more with Tom’s input.
The group exercises and expanding the length of the course
Keep the facebook group and follow up discussions when possible via email. Keep the class numbers to twelve too, but would love to see an extra day, or replicate the five day course in Sweden for the UK.
I think that if you removed anything from the course it would be significantly weaker. The exercises are a vital part of the course, the only way to gain an appreciation for how the concepts should be applied, and a belief that they might actually work. The tuition is vital because you wouldn’t be able to do the exercises without those. The warm up exercises on the first morning are vital for breaking the ice and making the participants comfortable with each other while removing ego as a barrier. I’d say the one thing I’d change is: – For Tom to closely observe each group during the tasks and feedback either during the task or after the performance.
Keep: – the hands-on approach; – the list of topics taught (but see below) Change: – if you need to create time, perhaps not teach motion vectors? Very hard to incorporate in the third day. – perhaps to be very explicit about which topic we will work on in our final performance piece (eg I will really focus on crossing the gaze in *this* moment of my piece; or I will really focus on including a callback and a foreshadowing). Each student to decide the one thing they will really work on, from the menu available.
The structure of the class and the hands-on approach. Change, the feedback given and the support during the work group.
Keep: Assignments Change: more theory and analyzing assignments time, late registrants get prize beforehand and not vague messages, instructor doesn’t´t sleep during the course time, 4 people course are/feels not like the same as 12people course (timeslots), planned lunch (I even think it should be included in the prize), videos filmed available to students afterwards,
Keep: teamwork I think IT was perfect.
I feel everything was relevant and therefore should be kept.
Jag tycker upplägget är bra och känner väl inte direkt att något behöver bytas.
Us the students have a tendency to start telling stories as the lecture goes on. They are charming and even useful in moderation. But on occasions Tom let it go on a little longer then needed, that’s the one piece of constructive feedback I can think of. Honestly I got so much out of it I don’t know what else to change.
I thought it was perfect as it was.
Ha lite mer problemlösning med saker och ideer som man hade med sig.
Keep: the working together in groups. That’s was great. Maybe it’s good to do more performances and practice to give feedback to each other more.
Oj… Jag tycker nog att allt var bra, intressant och lärorikt! Jag kan inte komma på något som borde ändras.
I love the coin and card exercises in the beginning it’s a real challenge as magicians to not immediately think of doing the best performance you can do. To strip everything away and start with basics is important and teaches us that performance is not just about the tricks. Keep Look think look action so much fun Working with others the best thing in the workshop
Everything Nothing
It is imperative that the course keeps on pushing the participants to constantly just jump into creating new routines using the techniques discussed. There is nothing that would be important to change apart from possibly offering to have a video camera on site to record all the mini-performances in ok quality so that not everyone has to sit there with their individual mobile phones or compact cameras.
Jag skulle önska att man skulle kunna få nån typ av feedback på ett konstruktivt sätt på det man skapat
